Civil Society Caucus for Climate Justice

The Civil Society Caucus for Climate Justice in Rabat, Morocco, on November 19–20 established a parallel, people-led process for civil society, especially for those unable to participate at the 27th COP of the UNFCCC in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6–18, 2022. The Caucus positioned itself inside the global climate justice movement to build venues for alternative articulation of common messages and action to oppose UN climate negotiations.

People-powered climate actions in Nairobi, Kenya

IBON Africa held focus groups and workshops on people-owned climate action in Pumwani and Kayole, Kenya, in October. Pumwani’s women and youth discussed climate-related risks and implications. They prepared suggestions for rights-based climate action, including the roles of people’s groups and civil society. Wahenga Youth in Kayole demanded urgent climate action, including government support for youth participation in climate policy and decision-making.

Co-organised with the Climate Change Network for Community-based Initiatives (CCNCI), this event featured a country-level dialogue tackling community-led climate action in the Philippines and a discussion of IBON International’s publications and launching of the online map of country initiatives. International and local speakers were also invited to present a post-mortem analysis of what transpired at COP27.
